There has been a surge of interest in homeopathy around the world as people realise the value in looking at the whole picture of a person’s health rather than taking symptoms or parts of the body in isolation. Homeopathy takes a holistic approach to health.  Recognition of the power of natural solutions to health is helping people to unlock obstacles to a healthier life.

Homeopathy has been practised worldwide for over 200 years to help treat a wide range of health issues and is the second largest system of medicine in the world today, as recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Homeopathy can be used by people at all stages of life, animals and even plants.

The power of homeopathy comes from simple principles which unlock any imbalances in your body and stimulates the body’s immune system to reduce susceptibility to disease.   Instead of merely taking away any symptoms, homeopathy helps to balance your whole system and improve your quality of life naturally.

Homeopathy can help with minor ailments such as cuts and bruises and coughs and colds. Homeopathy can also help with long-term problems, particularly those which have failed to respond to conventional medicine, such as arthritis, asthma, migraine, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, eczema and irritable bowel syndrome.

Homeopathy was established by Dr Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), who was disillusioned by some of the results of current medical procedures, particularly the practice of bloodletting and the use of toxic substances such as mercury and arsenic.

He, with his students and colleagues went on to systematically prove and record the results of over 120 substances and published this research in his Materia Medica.

The three main tenets in classical homeopathy are: do no harm, prescribe a single remedy at one time, and administer the lowest dose necessary to afford a gentle, positive response.

Since Hahnemann’s life, provings have been carried out on further substances and today there are over 8,000 remedies; most of them are made from plant, animal and mineral substances. (Provings Info, n.d.)

Remedies are made from many different substances using a method of serial dilution. The microdoses produced are called potentised remedies. The high dilutions produce extremely safe and effective medicines.  There is a growing volume of research regarding the efficacy of nano-medicine.

Simple, timeless, inspired by nature’s science and energy.

The scientific study of medicinal homeopathic remedies, and their sources, preparation, and use, forms the basis of the homeopathic Materia Medica. It is this knowledge held within the Materia Medica, tried and tested over 200 years that enables the homeopath to find the precise remedy suited to the individual patient’s needs. The remedies are part of an extremely effective system of medicine.

The efficacy of homeopathy in a wide range of conditions is increasingly being verified by high-quality clinical and laboratory trials (both human and animal), many of which have been published in respected journals in recent years e.g. The Lancet, British Medical Journal and Paediatrics. The Homeopathic Research Institute (HRI) coordinates and collates homeopathic research worldwide.  Click here to find out more.

The New Zealand Homeopathic Society also has an extensive reference library, which houses 1000’s of reference books, documents and homeopathic medical journals.   Visit by arrangement.  Click here to learn more about our reference library.

Homeopathy is a form of natural medicine that’s as individual as you are. A personalised approach to the consultation process, which may take an hour or more, is essential to identifying the appropriate remedy, particularly for chronic conditions. The homeopath investigates each individual's unique symptoms, rather than categorizing conditions with broad labels like “rheumatism” or “asthma.”. Often it is that unusual sensation or pain that may provide the all-important clue to your exact remedy. You will also be asked questions about your medical history, your family history, your mood and lifestyle. Your homeopath will then prescribe the most appropriate homeopathic remedy that matches the pattern of your symptoms.

In acute illnesses the response tends to be quite fast, and in some cases nearly instantaneous. It is commonplace for a child screaming with pain one moment (perhaps from teething or an earache) to calm down a minute or two later and fall asleep – after a dose of, say, Chamomilla.

On the other hand, chronic or long-standing problems may improve slowly and gradually. As might be expected, complaints which have developed slowly over many years generally take longer to improve than those which have developed more recently.

The New Zealand Council of Homeopaths (NZCH) is the registration body for professional homeopaths in New Zealand. The NZCH maintains a register of members who have been formally educated and clinically trained in homeopathy either in New Zealand or overseas. All members are expected to practise within the NZCH’s Rules of Practice and Code of Ethics which includes respect for the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Homeopathy is natural and safe and powerful. Homeopathic treatment has an excellent safety record. Because homeopathic medicines are non-toxic, they can be used by babies, children and during pregnancy. There are no side effects, only benefits. Homeopathic treatment offers a gentle and non-invasive approach to health.  As natural medicines they do not create drug dependency or addiction, and there are no withdrawal issues.

Yes, homeopathy works well alongside conventional medicine in a variety of ways, for example, to support recovery after an operation. Despite the differences in approach, homeopathic and conventional treatments work very well together.

Some health insurance providers cover complementary health by Homeopathic Practitioners who are registered with NZCH - check with your provider for more details.
