NZHS is a charitable organization dedicated to raising awareness and supporting the growth of homeopathy in New Zealand. Our mission is to educate New Zealanders on the scope of homeopathy and how it can benefit their well-being. Our members are passionate about promoting homeopathy and contributing to its development in the country. The Society is run by volunteers.

Historical Facts
- New Zealand’s history with homeopathy dates back to early settlers, including immigrants from England who brought homeopathic practices with them.
- The first homeopath on record in New Zealand was William Purdie, MD, from Airdrie, Scotland, who arrived in 1849 and settled in Dunedin. Shortly afterward, Carl Frank Fischer, a Berlin medical graduate, settled in Auckland. New research suggests that Elizabeth Colenso, may have been one of the earliest people to bring homeopathic remedies to New Zealand.
- In 1857, Fischer established the Homœopathic Association and, in 1858, a homeopathic hospital. He also published the first New Zealand homeopathic journal, The Homœopathic Echo (1855-1856). Copies of the Echo are available in the Society’s reference library.
- John Bell’s Homœopathic Pharmacy in Auckland supported the publication of the Echo. Another notable pharmacy, A. Pond’s, eventually merged with Marriage’s Pharmacy in 1880. In 1931, Marriage’s Pharmacy reported a “great trade, entirely with families,” showing the lasting popularity of homeopathy in New Zealand.
